Hong Kong Trip ~ 31 May to 3 Jun 07

Yes! I just went on a holiday to Hong Kong over the Vesak Day holidays. I managed to squeeze out some time to update my blog......

Day 1, Thursday 31 May:

Our flight was in the morning at 8.20am by Cathay. As the plane was fully booked, Cathay was actually trying to encourage passengers to volunteer for the next flight at 10.30am. We contemplated taking the next flight because they threw in a pretty good deal - S$98 cash and USD75 vouchers for you to shop at the duty free - per pax. Our tickets cost us $470 including tax, that's like 45% savings off the air-ticket price already! We did not take up the offer as we wanted to arrive in Hong Kong as early as possible, since we only get to spend 4 days 3 nights there. On hindsight, we should have taken up the deal and shop to our hearts' content at the duty free instead! Such deals don't come by everyday and we did not start our day in Hong Kong until about 3 plus pm in the afternoon anyways! *SOB*

We stayed at Royal Plaza hotel, located in between Prince Edward and Mongkok MTR in Kowloon and hit the nearest Wanton Mee stall at Fa Yuen Street. No photos of the food as we were too hungry (and greedy) and didn't stop to take any photos. Anyway, SO had a coconut-milky drink and fell ill after that. He returned back to the hotel to rest while I continued my shopping at Fa Yuen Street. I returned back to the hotel at about 7pm to find SO really sick, much to my dismay. He not only had diarrhea 3 times, but had also developed an allergy reaction to this flu medication that he bought off the rack from Watson's at the airport. He had rashes all over his body and was running a high fever too. In the end, I went to the nearest supermarket (luckily there's a huge mall - Grand Century - joint to our hotel) and bought many bottles of drinking water, mineral sports drinks, Yakult, bread and instant noodles. As SO cannot take any more medication (to avoid further allergies), he could only keep drinking water to flush out the toxins. My dinner was instant noodles that night......sob......

View from the hotel room. The sky is a clear sky-blue ... so nice!

Day 2, Friday 1 June

Luckily, SO recovered pretty well by the next day. Looks like the flushing worked! We went out to have lunch at this placed called Tai Hing Roast. The food there was really good! The milk tea and coffee were really very good! Very creamy!

Then we walked through Tung Choi Road to look at the sports shoes outlet before taking a bus to Tsim Sha Tsui. The double-decked buses in Hong Kong were really clean and comfortable! We alighted at the bus terminal just beside Star Ferry terminal and took at stroll along the Victoria Habour. It was about 12 noon and the heat was unbearable!

After some shopping around the Tsim Sha Tsui area, we took the MTR to Causeway Bay. We did not do much shopping there, but just walked around the area and 'see see look look'. We also stopped for a drink at one of the Cafes. I tried their milk pudding but it wasn't nice. I have not found a chance to have Yee Shun's milk pudding, which I know I can be assured of the standard. As the day turned dark, we moved on to take a tram to the Victoria Peak to view the night scenes from the peak and to have our dinner there. The queue to take the tram was so long that we bought the tickets to visit Madam Tussad's wax museum in order to get into the priority queue.

Tram to Victoria Peak

An overloaded tram? We were quite terrified and honestly worried for our safety!

At Madam Tussad's. A stern Einstein looks on......

David Beckham!

Bon Jovi! He is so handsome that I had to plant a kiss on him......

Night view from the peak!

We had our dinner at this place called Cafe Deco at about close to 9.30 pm. The food was pricy but really good! Again, I was so hungry so did not stop to take any photos. I really enjoyed my meal there very much and hoped to return again one of these days.

After the peak, we took a cab down to Lan Kwai Fong to have a feel of the clubbing scene in Hong Kong. Not sure if we walked the right lanes but the place was populated by mainly the Ang Mohs, which reminded of our own Boat Quay. I was hoping to see more locals and how they dress up to go clubbing, especially on a Friday night. But I guess I was disappointed.

Day 3, Saturday 2 June

I always feel a sense of panic on the second last day of any trip - so many places to visit, so little time left. Our original plan was to visit Macau and their casinos. However, after our 'eat-till-you-pop' timsum breakfast (yes, can you imagine we ordered about 12 different stuff for 2 persons?), it was already 12noon. The ferry journey will take about an hour or so, hence we decided to give Macau a miss and traveled to Tung Chung station - Citygate outlet mall - to do more shopping!

I must say I find Citygate outlet malls quite a let down. Firstly, there weren't many interesting shops there, mostly big brand names, and the discounts were not exactly fantastic. I think I might find better bargains in our Great Singapore Sale! We spent about 2 hours there (including time for coffee) and returned back to Kowloon - Jordan area for the quite well-known Mak Man Kee Wanton noodles. They were really good! The wantons were filled with 2 big pieces of fresh prawns... yummy! After that, we walked towards Park Lane and Grandville road for more shopping. I lurved Grandville road, as I found most of my better buys there!

The noodles come in a rather small bowl. The wantons were all hidden under the pile of noodles. Btw, the veg rocks too!

We went back to hotel to drop our bags, wash up before coming out to search for food again - this time for clay pot rice at Temple street. Finally found the place after much merry-go-round around the area. By the time we were done, its about 11pm. But it was the last night and we refused to return back to hotel, hence we went to APM at Kwun Tong MTR as the mall is supposed to be opened till wee hours of 2am.

Old-fashioned bottled coke...... so environmentally friendly!

Oyster omelette! But seriously, nothing beats Singapore's!

And the claypot chicken with mushrooms......

APM Shopping Mall

When we reached there, half the shops were closed! So disappointing. We went round a few floors, resigned to our fate and caught the last train at 12.20am back to hotel.

Day 4, Sunday 3 June

Last day, and I still have not tasted the Hui Liu Shan mango desserts, nor my Yee Shun Milk Company's milk pudding. So, I persuaded SO to visit Yee Shun Milk Company for breakfast as I know there's one Prince Edward outlet nearby our hotel.

When we reached there, the outlet was still closed! I remembered the Mongkok outlet opened quite early as they served breakfast. However, the outlet near Prince Edward MTR don't seem to start business early. So our business went to their neighbour instead and we managed to still have a very good breakfast - nissin noodle with luncheon meat and egg - yummy!

The last day meant buying souvenirs/food and packing our luggage bags. I went in search of the best Lao Po Bing, which in my opinion has to be Hang Heung's. However, they have lesser outlets as compared to Wing Wah and hence their outlets are harder to find. I had to travel towards Yau Ma Tei MTR to buy the biscuits and lugging them back took even more efforts! The other must buy was Maxim's Almond Flake biscuits. My colleagues were hooked on them when someone bought them for us the last time.

'Dried' 'wanton' mee!

My Loot from Hong Kong!

By 1pm, we checked out of our hotel and headed for the airport. That was the end of our trip and we swear the next Hong Kong trip has to be 6 days 5 nights long........

Posting again

Finally, after a long break from blogging!

I had a long break because my notebook was down. It took Fujitsu about 2 weeks plus to replace the harddisk and me another 3 weeks to finally get everything installed and for the machine to work reasonably. Life without a notebook was hard......;-P

I am The Emperor

The Emperor represents structure, order and regulation - forces to balance the free-flowing, lavish abundance of the Empress. He advocates a four-square world where trains are on time, games are played by rules, and commanding officers are respected. In chaotic situations, the Emperor can indicate the need for organization. Loose ends should be tied up, and wayward elements, harnessed. In situations that are already over-controlled, he suggests the confining effect of those constraints.
